It is too early for any details on the plot of the new film, but with the main cast seemingly on board to return, along with the Despicable Me 1 and 2 director helming the movie, there seems to be everything in place for another successful movie in the franchise. It was once again the Despicable Me franchise that blew Illumination's profile sky high, with Despicable Me 2 and spin-off movie Minions pulling in $2 billion between them, while Despicable Me 3 also broke.
There is no doubt that the world is ready for more Minions, and with Illumination behind the new Super Mario movie coming at the end of the year, this could be a big year for the company. In just two years, the little yellow chaos-creators and their reformed super-villain master will be back on the big screen, thanks to Illumination and Universal Pictures.
The fact that a new Despicable Me movie is already going into production suggests that belief in the franchise is still strong. It is expected that many of the restrictions in relation to Covid will be lifted by the summer, and that more people will return to cinemas on a regular basis.
The movie broke records at the sports event by being the first movie to feature trailers at two different Super Bowls, which cost Universal $12 million in total. Fans will be happy to know that after this summer's return, Despicable Me 4 will be released on Jul. 23, 2024. The film had a budget of 69 million dollars and made over half a billion dollars at the box office.
The new trailer for the movie was released during this year's Super Bowl, announcing a new date after being delayed since 2020. Steve Carell will reprise his role as Gru in an ensemble cast that also includes Steve Coogan, Miranda Cosgrove, and Pierre Coffin. By the time Despicable Me 4 arrives, it could be Illumination's biggest hit to date. The movies want to push box office sales higher than other movies that have been released in the last two years.
Despicable Me was the first movie released by Illumination Films.
