I never considered killing Maeve from the beginning of the series. The show is brutal and violent, but the bloodshed and gore are necessary. Maeve and Elena decided to leave Homelander and start afresh after the Boys season 3 finale. Killing Maeve would have been a disservice to her and to the fans, because her character development merited a better future. Maeve's happy ending was a well-earned one and there were never any plans to kill the character.
The decision of the Boys to not kill Maeve speaks to the series' sense of virtue. For a lot of reasons, we built to a happy ending for her. I agree with the criticism of it. Killing Maeve, who is bisexual, would have continued the trend. She finally has the freedom to live a normal life.
